Strategic Business Foundations

Strategic Business Foundations

About Course

Most professionals understand their function.
Few understand the business system.

Strategic Business Foundations gives you a structured, applied understanding of how companies create value, capture value, sustain competitive advantage, allocate resources, and make strategic decisions under uncertainty.

This is business logic applied.

You will learn to:

  • Break down a business model into value creation and value capture
  • Identify sources of competitive advantage beyond surface-level differentiation
  • Evaluate unit economics, margins, and scalability
  • Connect strategic choices to financial consequences
  • Allocate resources based on leverage, trade-offs, and opportunity cost
  • Assess strategic decisions with greater structural clarity

Throughout the course, you will build your Business Clarity Blueprint — a practical framework for analysing a company, your own venture, or the business context behind your role.

Course Content

Business Literacy for Modern Professionals
This module establishes the foundation for structured business thinking. You will move beyond functional, activity-based execution and learn to see a business as an interconnected system for creating and capturing value. You will also begin the Business Clarity Blueprint — the strategic analysis you will build throughout the course. By the end of this module, you will understand where your role fits within the wider business system and why functional expertise alone is not enough.

  • Why Functional Expertise Is Not Enough
  • Business as a System (Not Departments)

How Companies Actually Create Value
Most professionals use the word “value” constantly. Few can define it precisely — and fewer still can trace how a business creates, delivers, and captures it. This module examines the economic logic behind the business system. You will distinguish value creation from value capture, trace how activities contribute to customer value, and connect the business model to revenue and economic outcomes. By the end of the module, you will be able to analyse where a business creates value, how it captures part of that value, and where the underlying logic may weaken. You will use this analysis to build Section 1 of your Business Clarity Blueprint.

Competitive Advantage Simplified
The previous module explained how businesses create, deliver, and capture value. This module examines why some businesses can sustain stronger economic performance than others. You will learn to distinguish temporary differentiation from competitive advantage, identify potential sources of advantage, and evaluate how difficult those advantages are for competitors to replicate, substitute, or neutralise. By the end of the module, you will be able to analyse the competitive position of a real business and build Section 2 of your Business Clarity Blueprint.

Business Models & Unit Economics
The previous modules established how businesses create value and how competitive advantage may support that value over time. This module adds the financial layer. You will examine how fixed and variable costs, contribution margin, revenue structure, and operating leverage shape the economics of a business — and why growth does not automatically create stronger economics. By the end of the module, you will be able to analyse the unit economics of a real business, identify the financial assumptions behind growth, and build Section 3 of your Business Clarity Blueprint.

Strategic Decisions in Practice
Modules 1–3 built analytical clarity: value creation, competitive advantage, and unit economics. Module 4 turns that analysis into decisions. Pricing, resource allocation, and market entry determine how a business converts strategic understanding into action. Each decision must make sense both competitively and economically. This module builds your ability to evaluate those choices systematically — connecting competitive position, financial logic, and strategic trade-offs to concrete action. By the end of the module, you will complete Section 4 of the Business Clarity Blueprint and assemble all four sections into one coherent strategic analysis. Blueprint Output: Section 4 — Strategic Decision Analysis Prerequisite: Complete Blueprint Sections 1–3
